Kazuya Ishida – 2 day throwing workshop -APRIL 2024

Kazuya Ishida is a young Japanese potter, born in Bizen into a family of potters, who is making a name for himself worldwide.  Kaz first came to Kigbeare Studios on his 23rd birthday, (after a four year apprenticeship in Bizen, Japan,  with Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki) as Lisa Hammond’s apprentice during her time here.  He was often seen break dancing in the courtyard, using the studio windows as mirrors and this spilled over into his pottery, with his distinctive spiraling marks.  Since then, he has been involved in the Oxford University Anagama Project, has had many solo exhibitions and run many throwing workshops in different parts of the world, as well as having his own pottery and Gallery in Bizen.    He still dances.

Date:  Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th April 2024

Price:  £270 (deposit £150 then balance early April) includes lunch each day and refreshments throughout the day

Skill level:  intermediate and advanced (at the very least, you need to be able to batch throw competent cylinders)

In addition to sharing his spiraling technique, Kaz will cover spiral wedging, centering, throwing and pulling, using the Studio standard stoneware, local clay from Cornish claypit Dobles.

The Workshop starts at 9:30 on Friday 26th April, and generally the day will finish at 5pm.

Accommodation:  there is plenty of space to camp at Kigbeare, with a good shower and public loos, limited accommodation in the house (get in quick) or various Air bnb’s scattered around.  The Ashbury Hotel is our nearest neighbour, about a 4 min drive away, so that is a possibility too.

Students can take green work home at the end of the course, which will be charged at a cost of £1.50/lb and provided they are properly identifiable, students can leave 4 mugs/jugs/bowls for bisque firing at a cost of £2/lb plus P&P.
